At that time, with the limited human resources, technology, and financial, they were able to restore forests and critical land in Gunungkidul. Universitas Gadjah Mada through Faculty of Forestry devotes itself through Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi to build the Wanagama educational forest. The Wanagama Educational Forest is a forest owned by Faculty of Forestry Universitas Gadjah Mada with covering an area of 625.25 hectares. It was built from critical land and now it is a green forest with all kinds of functions such as oxygen provider, water, recreation areas, and also for education. Wana means a forest and Gama stands for Gadjah Mada. Wanagama is a masterpiece of Universitas Gadjah Mada through carving out nature with the rehabilitation of the critical land. Wanagama was built with distinct spirit, rehabilitation of the critical land for the public prosperity and rehabilitation of the critical land for saving the environment. For this, Wanagama should be used as an example for rehabilitation of the critical land in Indonesia, that has the critical land area more that 40 million hectares.
Wanagama has become a reference for rehabilitation forest and critical land, and now the spectrum continues to expand not only in Gunungkidul, Geopark Gunung Sewu area but also in Indonesia and even the world. The Wanagama Educational Forest is currently being managed professionally with academic community of Faculty of Forestry Universitas Gadjah Mada through the Wanagama Management Unit. The management of Wanagama continues to flare up the spirit of Wanagama struggle so, Wanagama should be a source of inspiration in thinking process and as a place to learn to manage the nature ecosystem.
